Chemicals That Aid In Biological Processes

The following will describe several ways of making chemicals used in biological activities.

1. Formalin

Formalin is a 40% formaldehyde solution in distilled water. To make A% of formalin solution from 13%, dilute A 3% mL of a solution up to B mL. For example to make formalin 4% from 40% seedlings. Take 4 mL of formalin 40%, then add distilled water up to 40 mL, "or add distilled water 36 rnL into 4 ml of formalin seeds 40%.

Formalin is used to preserve dead organisms. When you find a rare but dead organism, it is better preserved than thrown away. On the contrary, living organisms should not be killed just to make it preserve.

This can precipitate the loss of a particular organism, especially an endangered organism. The volume of formalin used is different depending on the organism.

To make a preset organism of small size can be used 5% formalin solution, whereas to make the preset organisms are large, can be used 10% formalin solution.

2. Artificial Sea Water

The required materials are magnesium chloride 1.4 grams, magnesium sulfate 9.9 gram, 114 gram sodium chloride, 5.7 gram potassium sulphate, and 6 liters of distilled water.

The trick is to dissolve separately each ingredient by using a portion of distilled water, then mix all the solutions and stir until evenly distributed.

3. Ringer's solute

The Ringer solution is used to keep the animal tissue alive for a while, for example in a frog muscle contraction experiment. Materials needed, namely calcium chloride 0.3 grams, potassium chloride 0.25 grams, sodium chloride 6.5 grams, and distilled water 1,000 mL.

The trick is to dissolve one of the ingredients into distilled water, then add one by one other ingredients while stirring until evenly distributed.
